When there is a plane crash, how to survive
Survival is the key
Libyan air crash happened on 5.12.2010 (US, east time). 103 people died. The only survivor is a 9 years old boy. The crashed plane is Airbus A300 – 200, which is described as a reliable flying machine. The weather could be one factor leading to this air tragedy.
Even the state of art plane can not deal with the severe weather well. It can be concluded that for now, the techniques created by plane engineers are still insufficient to ensure the passengers’ safety.
Surprisingly, according to U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), only 5 percent of passengers are killed, where 568 crashes occurred between 1983 and 2000.
Planecrashinfo and airdisaster document the number of crashes happened until 5.12.2010. They also give some basic information about the crash. Based on the information, it is still not feasible to conclude the reasons of crash and the techniques used for survival.
How to survive?
It is suggested that sitting far back of the plane is safer. But, people criticize that the pre-boarded people are elderly, who tends to have larger risks of being killed.
A good airline safety tips can be found here.
Some commercial sites offer aircraft survival kits. It can provide help for signaling, shelter, medical help, food and water, fire making etc. But, they are pretty bulky, hard to use.
There is another article for how to survive in the sea plane crash. But, the techniques recommended are either common senses or hard to be implemented in practice.
Another interesting fact about survival from plane crash is that most of survivors are young boys or girls. In this report, the oldest person who is survived from plane crash is 31 years old. Most of survivors are under 20 years old. So, age is a good predicator of survival?
There are not plane safety engineering breakthroughs. If plane is not able to land safely, the passengers’ lives are endangered. I will keep updating the emerging new plane safety features.
Scientific research of air plane safety
National Transportation Safety Board is a good database used for researching the plane crash background, narrative of plane crash scenario. The qualitative research, for example, multi-variable analysis, statistics regression, can be used based on these data.
