The first – artificial life, the short term goal

June 8, 2010

The first artificial life was born, its short term…

John Craig Venter and his team has successfully created the first synthetic bacteria. The team made the new chromosome and inserted them into yeast cells. The modified yeast cells are proven being able to accept the newly inserted chromosome. It is a milestone, for the first time, human can create another artificial life.  The more complex lives such as plants, animals can also be artificially made in the future. But, really?

Based on the project mission statement, the synthetic biology project goal specifically target at  various kinds of biological products and renewable fuels. The project funding is from Synthetic Genomics Inc. and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).  Synthetic Genomics Inc was also founded part by John Craig Venter, with  the venture capital support from the oil giant, exxon Inc.  It means the project is supported almost entirely by the energy company as well as DOE. Then the goal of the project is very clear. It is entirely targeted at renewable energy.

But how about the long term…?
