Open source car – C, MM, N

June 24, 2010

A green car, an open source car!

The open source car “C, MM, N” propounded common has been around about 3 years.  The C,mm,n foundation is responsible for the car design and development. It first attracted public attention in the 2009 Amsterdam’s AutoRAI show. It has several following killing features:

(1) Zero emission

(2) Hydrogen-powered

(3) Thermoplastic exterior

(4) Soy-based memory foam

(5) Recyclable materials

It is very apparent, it is a green car. Even with these good features, recently, there are still concerns for how safe of the C.MM.N car. As we know, most of car manufacturers are big government or private owned companies, such as Ford, GM, TOYOTA. The 3 years old open source car project still needs time to be acceptable to public. But, it is a doable job!, do you believe so?

Open source enables freely and quickly sharing of knowledge, which make creation of new ideas easier. However, due to institutional and economic reasons, no all the new ideas are realizable. In the community of open sources, there are a lot of idealists. And economists are a group of people holding realism. Ten years ago, two economists wrote a paper “the simple economics of open source”. They, as outsiders of the open sources community, might provide some valuable views toward the development of open sources.
