China is going west

July 9, 2010

Go West

Do not confuse for the topic, west is not western countries, but the west region of China. Xi an, one of the most important cities in the west of China, is expected to (Thanks susie’s comment) receive the approval of the direct-lead under the China central government. It signifies china is determined in going west.

Why China do so?

(1) Compared with east, west is not well cultivated. West accounts for over 70% of china area. But, the industrial output is much lower than the east.

(2) West has oil, natural gas, miners, which china is hungry for.

(3) West is important for China national security. The Uighur riot in Urumqi, Xinjiang last year has facilitated the birth of go west policy.

What will China do in west?

Go west does not change much on the west political policies. It does change much on economics and technology in west. China has made an ambitious goal. Every year, the economic growth of west is not lower than 10%, source (Chinese version, it can be readable, if you read it with Google Chrome. The Chrome translation tool can automatically translate it for you).

Environment protection, which China has not done well in the past, is emphasized in this go west movement, source. It is expected to plant more than 2.75 million acres trees in the next 10 years, source. It also plans to help more than 94 million people to improve the drinking water quality, source.

Education is another focus of the go west policy. By 2020, the education level of western people should be similar to the east, source.
