GeoCouch, an extension of CouchDB to query Geo location

August 25, 2010

Geo + database = GeoCouch

2010 is not only the year of iPhone4, iPad, and Android, it is also a year of Geo location. Foursquare, Gowalla, brightkite, loopt. Facebook introduced the Geo location function. Twitter also has turned the Geo location lately.

GeoCouch is an extension of CouchDB. It makes the query of geo location become fast & easy by using CouchDB. You build the database, document, and query it using rest technique.

For example, with this query:
http://localhost:5984/geodata/_external/geo?q={“geom”:”loc”,”bbox”:[-180,-90,180,90]}

It can return:
myhome 151.208333 -33.869444

GeoCouch is built based on Python, spatiallite, CouchDB. It is being led by Volker Mische, which is an open source evangelist, in particular for CouchDB.
