Flot: agile library for cute charting

October 2, 2010

Careful techie bloggers on WordPress may have noticed that the blog stats chart module has had a face lift. The plotting engine is now flot instead of Flash.

Flot is a pure JavaScript plotting library for jQuery, charting with arbitrary data sets on-the-fly client-side. It is targeted for simple and easy usage, yet with attractive looks and interactive features like zooming and mouse tracking. Flot has the potential for Web 2.0 data mining/business intelligence purposes which is targeted by IOLA, a software company co-founded by Ole Laursen, the developer of flot. See FlotUsage for various sites and projects using flot, including e-commerce companies and financial analysis service providers.

The popularity of flot is not ephemeral, but rather phenomenal. Flot supports almost all popular browsers, and it is based on the well-known cross-browser JavaScript library jQuery. It is under MIT License, which is commercially friendly.
